Radiotherapie Hirslanden
Radiotherapie Hirslanden AG operates over two sites, at Klinik Hirslanden in Zurich and in nearby Aarau and is one of only a few radiotherapy institutes in Europe to offer the full range of treatments. Treatments include CyberKnife® radiosurgery, stereotactic and conventional radiotherapy, intraoperative radiotherapy and brachytherapy.
CyberKnife® in Zurich
The width of the radiation beam can be adapted to the volume of the tumour and it also has stereotactic abilities in some body areas. This enables it to fix the location of the tumour before and during each treatment session.
Trilogy® stereotactic radiotherapy
Some patients face long delays in obtaining radiotherapy in their own countries, but Radiotherapie Hirslanden has three Trilogy® radiotherapy systems. Treatment can usually be commenced as soon as international patients can arrange to attend.
Internal radiotherapy saves radiation burn to sensitive skin
CyberKnife® radiosurgery treats small, well-defined, early stage tumours with uprecedented power and accuracy, even when located in inaccessible areas which make them inoperable to a surgeon. It can also target complex shapes and some treatments can be completed in a single, painless session. Most other treatments can be provided within three 90-minute sessions on consecutive days.
Visit the CyberKnife page for further details
The tumour can therefore be targeted more accurately than with conventional radiotherapy. Not only does this reduce damage to surrounding healthy tissue, but it enables greater power to be used, which shortens each treatment session.
Trilogy® radiotherapy uses a broader beam than CyberKnife® so does not achieve the same high precision, but it is able to treat a wider range of conditions.
Intrabeam® intraoperative 'photon' radiotherapy is a new system where radiotherapy is applied internally, directly to the tumour bed during a lumpectomy. This saves weeks of external radiotherapy later and radiation burn to sensitive skin.

Radiotherapie Hirslanden works with Oncology, Urology and other specialities within Klinik Hirslanden so you do not have to specify which form of treatment you are seeking. Your case will automatically be reviewd by a multidisciplinary panel to sensure that the most appropriate therapy or combination of therapies is applied.
Brachytherapy
In brachytherapy, the radiation source is placed in direct contact with the tumour to be treated. The advantage is that the radiation takes effect directly in the malignant tissue. This means that the fall-off of in the radiation dose in the surrounding tissue is much higher than with external radiotherapy.
Brachytherapy therefore allows a higher radiation dose to be administered in the shortest possible time. The total duration of treatment is, in general, reduced from six weeks to one week. A further advantage is the significantly lower radiation exposure of patients compared to traditional radiotherapy.
Even in the case of advanced tumours or the recurrence of a tumour following traditional radiotherapy, brachytherapy provides patients with considerable advantages, whether used alone or in conjunction with traditional radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy.

Information for doctors and patients
Klinik Hirslanden is one of a small but growing number of centres around the world which is now using this system. Patients must enrol in a clinical trial and Intrabeam® will not be suitable for all cases (we understand approx 50%) but several patients each month do receive treatment in Zurich. Cases can only be assessed during the operation. Those not suited to this treatment proceed to external radiotherapy in the normal way.
Visit the manufacturer's web site for more information on Trilogy® radiotherapy.
