Photodynamic Therapy is a fast developing area of medicine with an increasing range of applicattions.  Probably the most familiar of these is in the treatment of skin cancer.

As an alternative to ablation or cryosurgery, a small quantity of photo-sensitising cream is applied to the tumour area and allowed time for absorption, before being irradiated with a special light source.  Red, incoherent polarised light in the range between 680nm and 720nm is used to activate the cream and to kill the tumour.

Cosmetic results have been very good but the initial high cost of the specialist light sources and the photosensiting cream held back early take up of the procedure.

Since then both the light sources and the cream have become available at more reasonable cost and with the prevalance of skin cancer on the rise around the world, PDT looks set for a wider take-up.

Whilst initially delivered mostly in hospitals, PDT is ideal for larger general opractitioners' premises and specialist skin cancer clinics.
MHL currently features the following PDT light source
